If you’re ever in Redfern, you must (and I mean must) stop and get a doughnut from Donut Papi. That is, if they haven’t sold out already. They’re just that good and let me tell you why.
Like most other sweet tooths, doughnuts hold a special place in my heart…and stomach. They remind me of my childhood in particular, when I would go shopping with my mum. She would often treat me with my choice of doughnut, and it was always either cinnamon sugar or iced with sprinkles. I would choose from the different shapes (I loved the twisted ones) and flavours and reveled in the taste of the sweet dough.
Since then, I always keep my eye out for a good-looking doughnut.
When Doughnut Time hit the scene, I thought I hit the jackpot. However, I soon found the flavours were just too gimicky and sickly sweet. They didn’t take me back or give me that nice warm and fuzzy shopping-with-my-mum kind of feeling.
It wasn’t until last year when I was at the Sydney Makers & Shakers Market that I found *the one*. There was a bright doughnut stall and my eyes went straight to the plump strawberry doughnut. I can still remember my first bite (can you tell I really love food?). I was immediately taken aback. The taste of childhood nostalgia washed over me. It was the best doughnut I had eaten in a long time. I made sure to go back and tell the owners of the stall how impressed I was.
When I looked them up on Instagram, I quickly recongised them as I was already a follower. They were the infamous Donut Papi, a gourmet Sydney doughnut shop.
Since then I’ve been a devout fan. I longingly scroll through their sugary sweet Instagram feed, daydreaming of what flavour I’m going to try next.
A few weeks ago for my birthday, I got the chance to make my daydream a reality. My partner and I planned a road trip to the Northen Beaches, and we went out of our way to visit the Donut Papi store for the first time. It did not disappoint. We bought a four pack of doughnuts and devoured them throughout the day. The flavours we tried were Strawberry milkshake (my favourite – yum!), Biscoff (seriously yum, I mean it is Biscoff), Chestnut brown sugar walnut (sweet with a delicious crunch) and Choc sprinkles (my least fav of the four but still very nice).
So, if you couldn’t tell already, I really rate Donut Papi doughnuts. They’re a small business who just really love what they do, and it shows in their product. Doughnuts are super delicious, but when they’re done right, they have the ability to transport you to a time when things were simple, and the world was bright. If you’re ever in the area or get the chance, definitely jump on these homemade doughnuts. Run, don’t walk.
