Get out your glass jars and containers because we’re going (plastic-free) shopping.

The Source Bulk Foods is a plastic-free alternative to regular grocery stores. Instead of buying pre-packaged food, you bring you own containers (big or small) and fill them up on site. They stock a large range of pantry staples, confectionary, herbs and teas, just to name a few.

Discover my top five favourite things you’ll always find me buying from The Source Bulk Foods. From liquid gold maple syrup to chocolate treats these are items you can’t pass up on.

Organic Maple Syrup

Once I tried this maple syrup, I knew I could never buy anything else. It’s been four years and I still swear by this syrup. It’s dark, golden, sweet and so flavourful, so much so that I often steal sips of it straight from the bottle at home.

I never used to like the flavour of store-bought maple syrup and especially not the maple flavoured imitation syrup. I didn’t enjoy it over pancakes and just never got the hype. I decided to try the syrup from Source one day, and I was blown away by how good it tasted. I now love topping my pancakes with maple syrup. I also use this as a sweetener in porridge, in baked goodies and even in savoury dishes.

Whilst it’s on the more expensive side, the flavour is well worth it. Top tip – store in the fridge as it keeps it fresher for longer.

Malted milk balls

Three words – Maltesers, but better. I said it, these chocolate treats are what Maltesers wish they could be. The Source has a large confectionary section, but these are the standout. I love filling a jar with these chocolates and snacking on them throughout the week. The chocolate is smooth and creamy, and the inside has just the right combination of flavour and crunch. The inside is also a lot more compact than a Malteser and that’s why I like it. They’re the ultimate movie-night snack.

Organic buckwheat flour

The Source is a great place to get speciality flours, like Buckwheat flour, that may be hard to find in regular grocery stores. I love that I can control exactly how much flour I want to buy, instead of being restricted to a really large or small bag that doesn’t fit my needs.

I buy this buckwheat flour mainly for one specific recipe – Deliciously Ella’s vegan and gluten-free Fudgy Brownies (it’s an amazing recipe you should definitely try). I enjoy baking with it and having it on hand in my pantry. It’s a great gluten-free flour and isn’t too expensive.

Organic cacao powder

This cacao powder has a similar story to the maple syrup – it’s so much richer and more flavourful than its grocery store counterparts. I like to use this cacao powder in brownie recipes or chocolate cake recipes, pretty much anytime I’m baking something chocolaty.  I can taste the difference and enjoy having it as a pantry staple.

Organic coconut sugar

Coconut sugar is such a delicious sugar to bake with. The closest thing to compare it to is brown sugar as it’s golden in colour and has a sweet toffee flavour. It’s delicious in baked goods, sweet drinks and savoury dishes. I like buying coconut sugar from The Source as I can buy it in bulk as my local grocery store only has it in a small package.

Cooking with large amounts of this can get a bit expensive, so to stretch it out in recipes, I combine it with brown sugar. That way I get that toffee flavour without the hefty price tag.
